In these days of microwave ovens and frozen food, you may be happy to find out how and with what utensils our grandmas cooked delicious dishes.


Room 1

Cooking appliances

From the Middle Ages through to the XVIIIth century the fireplace was the only way to cook.

Thanks to industrial change, there appeared tile “ potagers ”, the first small wood and coal stoves, roasting spits, together with cast-iron, copper and iron utensils.

Room 2

Aluminium
from 1925 to 1950

The first half of the XXth century saw the highlight of aluminium utensils. In front of this light metal, heavy cast iron or copper utensils were fast relegated to cupboards!

During that period whole series of aluminium pots and pans appeared, in varying thicknesses; wood and coal stoves were everywhere.

New cooking methods appeared: town gas, bottle gas and even electricity!

Room 3

Utensils for stewing, grilling and mincing

Photo salle 3 Have a look at the utensils our grandmothers used to vary cooking methods: grills, iron pans and a lovely collection of pressure cookers.

A whole range of small cooking utensils: choppers, colanders, graters, crushers, squeezers, ... .

Following room 3, you will see a glass cabinet showing fragile rare objects: pâté terrines, egg stands, and coffee pots.

Various tongs for sugar, asparagus, a set of cutlery for legs of lamb, as well as iron, pewter spoons and forks,... .

Room 4

Pastry, butter and coffee

This room also exhibits baking tools: scales, egg whisks, cake tins , waffle irons, sorbet tins, ... .

Two areas are dedicated:

- one to coffee with: grills, mills and coffee pots in all sorts of shapes.
- another to milk, butter, yogurt and cheese.

Food preservation

Notice an old egg-keeping jar from Mazamet dating from the late XIX th century.

Room 6

The regions of France:
Knives and Choppers

Utensils typical of each region will help you travel throughout France : Milk cane, cassoulet dish, “boudoirs” tin, cake tin, mulled wine pot.

Room 7

Children and cooking
Children's culinary toys from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries

In this room, today's children will be able to discover a collection of toys from the early 20th century. For years, toys used to reflect mom's activities, especially cooking.

Now is the time for parents to delve into childhood memories!
