Grand-mère

A short history of the Museum.

In 1995 the book “La cuisine de nos grands-mères” was published. At the end of it, its author Jean-Noël Mouret claimed that to his knowledge there was no museum in France exclusively dedicated to Kitchen utensils from the past.

A small group of Saint Denis La Chevasse people, in agreement with the town council, decided to create such a museum, thinking it might be possible to remedy this situation. In a region popular with tourists, the project aimed at participating in the conservation of forgotten heritage.

In May 1996, AMUCA, The Museum of Kitchen Utensils from the past Association was created, premises were found and it took two years to gather and restore the utensils.

On July 1 1998 when the Museum of Kitchen utensils from the past was inaugurated with M. Jean-Noël Mouret attending, there were only 4 exhibitions rooms and 400 objects. Since then, the Museum has expanded to 6 rooms today with more than 1600 objects.

This local museum is managed by an association of volunteers.

Médaille du tourisme

On October 30 2010 , the Museum had the great honor to be granted the silver medal for Tourism, a deserved reward for the investment and work of all its volunteers.
